Blue front tires and a blue warehouse: the collaboration between Swapfiets and Pon Logistics
The blue front tire: the hallmark of Swapfiets. Customers of this popular brand can rent a bike for a fixed monthly fee. And besides Swapfiets’ tires, the warehouse of Pon Logistics in Barneveld is also becoming increasingly blue. Barneveld is an important central point for storage, logistics, and bike repairs. We spoke with Jasper Zonnenberg, COO of Swapfiets, and André van den Breemer, logistics department head of Pon Logistics, about Swapfiets, the collaboration and ambitions for the future.
The collaboration between Pon Logistics and Swapfiets has existed for years. How did it come about?
“The connection has always been there. It existed from the very beginning when the founders needed an investor for their idea during their student days,” says Jasper. André adds, “Pon believed in the plan, and thus, Swapfiets became part of the Pon family. The initial bulk of bikes was stored at the Losplaats in Leusden. As we grew with Swapfiets, we moved to Veenendaal, and when that became too small, we found our place in Barneveld. In the meantime, we not only stored bikes at Pon Logistics but also all the parts. And now repairs have been added.”

How would you describe Pon Logistics as a logistics service provider?
“For us, they are a partner capable of handling waves of inventory that we haven’t always anticipated. They are very flexible and have truly grown with us. Even during times when we had the highest storage ever. We had bad luck with Corona, but they still managed to help us,” says Jasper.

What are your ambitions with Swapfiets for the future?
“Where the focus was initially on aggressive growth, the ambition now is to make the business profitable. We are actively working on becoming more efficient. For example, we have many bikes stored in racks in Barneveld that are not being used. We are now devising a plan to reuse parts in a customer- and environmentally-friendly manner. Many parts in a bike are still like new, which we can use for other bikes.”
